What are the methods for doing so?  The answer: LEARN and &#8220;context keys.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my new book,  <em><a href=\"https:\/\/rowman.com\/ISBN\/9781538133248\/Sustaining-a-City's-Culture-and-Character-Principles-and-Best-Practices\">Sustaining a City\u2019s Culture and Character: Principles and Best Practices<\/a><\/em>, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalpublicspace.org\/index.php\/jps\/article\/view\/1288\/786\">comparative experiences<\/a> around the world, I propose a new tool that I call LEARN (<em>L<\/em>ook, <em>E<\/em>ngage, <em>A<\/em>ssess, <em>R<\/em>eview, and <em>N<\/em>egotiate) as a way of sustaining urban culture and character in transformative times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/25-pXe15Pdo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video, I introduce LEARN on Newbury&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/visitnewbury.org.uk\/\">main shopping streets<\/a> as a patient, interdisciplinary immersion that will help an interested citizen determine the primary attributes of a place, the raw materials that fuse history, the present, and the future.   I also introduce the book&#8217;s &#8220;context keys&#8221; of <em>familiarity, congruity, and integrity<\/em>.
