{"id":1443,"date":"2021-03-13T13:11:16","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T13:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sustainingplace.com\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2021-03-13T14:15:51","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T14:15:51","slug":"place-parts-episode-15-river-city-and-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainingplace.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/13\/place-parts-episode-15-river-city-and-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Place Parts, Episode 15: River, City, and Town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rowman.com\/ISBN\/9781538133248\/Sustaining-a-Citys-Culture-and-Character-Principles-and-Best-Practices\">Sustaining a City&#8217;s Culture and Character<\/a> begins with the notion that communities reflect the fusion of everyday life with the various forces and environments common to urban settings. &nbsp;One example is the overlap of built and natural environments, and the inspiration inherent in their combined appearance.&nbsp;I focus on water-influenced environments from the outset.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MDXsosyJEYs?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, I reassert the book&#8217;s narrative that although it is possible to summarize some generic&nbsp;marks of urban culture and character\u2014waterfronts, say; or the appearance of cities from well-known urban bridges\u2014conclusions are elusive without additional information and reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In place of the book&#8217;s examples, I document select inspirations and issues spurred by the River Thames from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\/places\/marble-hill-house\/history-and-stories\/the-view-from-richmond-hill\/\">Richmond Hill in London<\/a>, as compared to the Rivers <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Kennet\">Kennet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Lambourn\">Lambourn<\/a> in Newbury.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The not-so-subtle message redux?
